Point
Reyes Visions
is the first large format photography book on the Point Reyes region to
be published in 38 years. It combines deeply saturated color photography
with text rich in local knowledge and scientific fact. The ambitious 192
page cloth bound book with 259 color photographs was produced entirely by
the photographer, Richard Blair and writer, Kathleen Goodwin.
They eloquently share their passion for the area, and their local knowledge is an indispensible source of enjoyment for the traveler to these parts. The form of the book is unusual for a photography book as it has a personal narrative which takes the reader on an illustrated journey describing the community as well as as the natural history. Point Reyes Visions covers the major environments of West Marin, including chapters on the Point Reyes National Seashore, Tomales Bay, Mount Tamalpais, the Mount Vision fire, organic farming, oysters, and a chapter "Scenes of Wonder & Curiosity" which tells of unusual local events. The Classic Hikes Chapter provides specific locations to explore, yet the wild heart of the Point Reyes peninsula, where mountain lions reign and nature's mysteries unfold, is celebrated. Included is the first published photo of a mountain lion in Marin county. The current Point Reyes National Seashore superintendent, Don Neubacher, wrote the foreword. Park Service scientists provided some of the latest information on the park's wildlife. One chapter of note lists the local conservation organizations and how to support them. The authors have a personal story about Inverness ridge. Their land and cabin were burned in the Mount Vision fire of Oct. 3 1997. After they rebuilt a live/work space, they set up a scanner and computer and created this large format artist's book in a little loft, doing all the steps of publishing on a personal computer. It had not been possible for individuals to do this earlier because personal computers were not powerful enough. Blair and Goodwin designed, wrote, drum-scanned, and edited the book over four years, choosing pictures from Blair's lifetime collection. The book is a pioneering project in book publishing as it is rare for a book of this quality to be created entirely at home. It is an artisan book because it was done as a combined process of production and creation. This allowed a rare degree of creative freedom and a tight integration of text and image. They also imageset the plate ready films. It could be the first book of its size to be totally produced by its authors without outside assistance. Susan Wu, book buyer for The Depot in Mill Valley, said " it is the best book of its type I have ever seen." Point Reyes Visions was printed in Singapore (by the British Museum's art edition printer) to have intense color because of customized color separations combined with ultra heavy ink coverage on the press.
